Marcelo Gomes, Principal Dancer, American Ballet Theatre
What career would you choose if you could not be a dancer?MG: I would be a chef. What are your worst fears (professionally or personally)?MG: Professionally is to stop growing and personally is not being able to see my family. Which person (dead or alive) would you most want to dance with, if you could?MG: I would love to dance with Madonna. Her music was the first music I actually danced to at home when I was little. If a child told you they wanted to be a dancer, what would your advice be?MG: My advice is to love it, work really hard, but also keep a good sense of humor. If you could be an animal, what animal would you choose and why?MG: I think I would want to be a bird, so I could fly. What is your greatest indulgence?MG: I love to indulge in a good spa or a good meal. What 3 items do you always have in your bag with you? MG: My dance belt, ballet shoes and Aleve. What career would your family have chosen for you?MG: Maybe they would have chosen acting. What is your idea of perfect happiness?MG: Cuddling with my dog, Lua, on a Sunday, drinking coffee in a bright sunny day. Who would you like to most have a coffee with (could be dead or alive)?MG: It would be a nice encounter at Starbucks with Nureyev and Balanchine, very simple. What is your favorite city to tour to and why?MG: Paris, because I did a lot of growing up there when I went to school there, and because of that, it always feels very comfortable. What is your biggest mishap in a performance?MG: I don't mishap and tell! Is there a special meal you have before performances?MG: I like to eat a big salad with lots of protein for energy, then right before the show, I turn to chocolate and coffee.
